• Auckland University of Technology
- AUT has a great story to tell about its history.
We are New Zealand's newest university, yet we have been educating people in the Auckland region for over a century. AUT first came into being in 1895 as the Auckland Technical School, opening its doors with a roll of 30 students. At that time we were a school for the trades, teaching subjects such as mechanical and architectural drawing, cookery and dressmaking.
In the century since, we have undergone many changes, splitting off a secondary school and helping set up two other technical institutes to accommodate the Auckland region's growth.
In 1989, when we were called the Auckland Institute of Technology, we became the first polytechnic in New Zealand to offer degrees and masters courses. That enabled us to meet the growing demand by industry and the professions to provide higher-level programmes that focused on creating work-ready graduates.
One of our greatest moments was at the turn of the new millennium when we became New Zealand's newest university – the Auckland University of Technology. But we are a new kind of university. We take pride in engaging with our communities, undertaking exciting and meaningful research, offering a unique style of teaching and research, and in particular, watching our graduates flourish in their chosen careers.
Although we are a new university, we haven't forgotten our roots. We continue to offer an education that meets the needs of society and is connected to the real world. We still believe that the strongest contribution we can make to New Zealand is to produce excellent, capable graduates in relevant fields.
